        I cannot deny that my introductory lecture at Manchester spoke of the best order of studying the classics, but I fear as a whole the lecture is superficial (it is 14 years ago) and I cannot find a copy. The thought in it I most value is that modern languages ought to come first. This idea was to me original. I afterwards found it was widely held in Germany; it has been elaborately urged in a recent number of the Westminster Review.
