[Letter of Francis William Newman to J. Chapman Esq.] 8 East
Parade, My dear Chapman, Mr. Greg has been rewriting & I expect (in my view) improving many parts of his book. If his name were annexed, I have no doubt it would sell. In that case, I would gladly advance £20 towards its expences, to be repaid, without interest, from the first profits. But I know he so fears to damage his power of earning money by his pen, which is now important to him, that he is not likely to give way in this matter. I will nevertheless suggest to him what is to be said on the other side. You best can judge whether it will come from you too quick after some other works; I should think not: for Mackay is so large a book & so learned as to fall to a different class of readers from the Phases & Mr Greg's book. Thanks for your trouble & interest about the little book of poetry. Sincerely yours,
